I got an error message like ".... cannot read ../Human/ubuntu.png. No such file or directory" after set the gdm theme to Human Circle of Friends in Ubuntu 9.04. Commenting these lines..

<normal file="../Human/ubuntu.png"/>
<pos x="2%" y="3%" width="33%" height="scale" anchor="nw"/>
</item>
looks solve the problem.
